While there's not much going on around Sunday River in the Summer, the golf course is the attraction
Sunday River is a four season resort in the town of Newry, north of Portland about an hour. The golf course is mountain style, a Robert Trent Jones, Jr designed course of 7130 yards, 146 slope from the tips, with three other tee boxes. It’s typical of mountain courses with big elevation change, sloping and steep fairways, good sized landing areas between the trees, and mid-sized to large greens, well guarded by bunkers. The views here are incredible across the Sunday River Valley to the Mahoosuc Range, including Old Spec, the third highest peak in Maine. Each hole is unique and isolated from the rest of the course, playing through the corridors of the forest on the hillside of the ski area. Exceptionally well maintained, in my opinion, the best course in the state, and there’s some good competition.
Played this past week, conditions weren’t all that great, believe it had been dry for the most part. The course is on a spectacular piece of mountain land with major sloping and hilly fairways with a lot of elevation change throughout. The front side has a combination of strong holes, and some fairly mundane ones, and the back was a little more parkland style. Lots of placements shots required throughout with doglegs and narrow landing areas, a definite shotmaker’s style of course.
Thanks for the review Robert, if you’ve played Sunday River, please give it a shout in our comments section below, Cheers!
